Today's tip: Stay hydrated
In addition to numerous physical health benefits, staying hydrated can help with your mental health too. Proper hydration can lead to increases our energy and mood, while dehydration has been shown to negatively impact memory and focus. Studies have even shown dehydration to be linked to symptoms of depression.
Drinking water sounds easy, but many of us do not drink enough! Additionally, how much water an individual should drink can be confusing with many different recommendations available online. We've all heard the standard "drink eight glasses of water per day." Generally, this recommendation is still widely followed. However, individuals require different amounts of fluid based on their overall health, their environment, the amount and type of exercise in which they engage, and if they are pregnant or breastfeeding. Further, it is possible to drink too much water. For example, for individuals with certain health conditions, too much water or fluids can be harmful. So, what's the best way to know how much you should consume daily? Talk to your doctor, especially if you have underlying health conditions. However, for the average person, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report general recommendations of about 15.5 cups for men and 11.5 cups for women.
